Exhibits     CV/Docs     All Sara Cole

Cole is a nationally represented, internationally exhibited author, teacher and fine art painter currently living in San Jose, CA. Cole has a deep and profound obsession with the natural world. From insects and birds and humans to botanicals and root systems, weather patterns and migrations and the effects of systems upon each other, Cole spends countless hours imagining these as visual symbols layered on top of each other -- sometimes as many as 100 times in one painting. She has always had an experimental nature in her work with her materials which have included: wax/encaustic, oil, acrylic, body casting/molding, ceramic sculpture, rope, unfired clay, coffee, dry drawing materials, latex, wire, found objects/wearble textiles, roofing paper, wood, botanical/natural plant material, rice, found objects/collage and much more. Her work is in public and private collections throughout the world.

Sara Cole

Sara Cole Biography

Cole is a nationally represented, internationally exhibited author, teacher and fine art painter with a full-time art making studio practice. Cole has placed work with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Bi-annual Auction, Hilton Hotels, the Microsoft Collection, Stanford University, the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, the Grand Hyatt in Atlanta, Iberia Bank in Louisiana, and De Anza College in Cupertino. Cole has an extensive list of exhibition history including NYC's Asian Cultural Center Gallery and Sunset Magazine show houses and for events such as a City Year fund-raiser with HGTV's Kenneth Brown. Cole is in the private collections of many patrons including that of Actress Sela Ward.

Cole earned her BFA in ceramic sculpture and installation/performance art with a minor in art history in 2002. In 2006, she earned her MFA in painting and drawing. In 2007 she studied graduate level Non-Western Contemporary Art History for one year, all before mentioned at San Jose State University. Cole has taught at the collegiate level for more than a decade including foundations of design, color, beginning drawing, figure drawing, beginning painting and encaustic painting. She currently teaches out of her studio.

Cole works with many different materials as she has always had a great understanding and visceral reaction to the ability for any tool or mark making substance to emphasize her emotive connection with her work.

Sometimes Cole mixes a certain color or value five or even ten times until it creates the desired compositional reaction, a constant struggle for her as she also obsesses on the interactions of shape, line, and form. She approaches each and every work without a plan for the final image -- she creates intuitively with some expectation of a tools effect on a work, but primarily works with each current mark as a reaction to the mark that came before it.
